Update 11/19/12: Filmmaker Michael Moore, Nobel Peace Laureates and musician Graham Nash prioritize support for Bradley
Today, filmmaker Michael Moore released an open letter to President Obama in which he outlined ten requests in order for President Obama “to do the job we elected you to do.” Number 9 on the list is free Bradley Manning:
FREE BRADLEY MANNING. End the persecution and prosecution of an American hero. Bush and Cheney lied to a nation to convince us to go to war. Manning allegedly hacked the war criminals’ files and then shared them with the American public (and the world) so that we could learn the truth about Iraq and Afghanistan. Our history is full of such people who “break the law” for the greater good of humanity. Army Specialist Bradley Manning deserves a medal, not prison.
This is following the release last week of a letter of support for Bradley by three Nobel Peace Laureates: Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mairead Maguire and Adolof Perez Esquivel. In their letter, they call on Americans “to stand up in support of this whistleblower who defended their democratic rights.” They say, “If Bradley Manning released the documents attributed to him, we should express to him our gratitude for his efforts toward accountability in government, informed democracy and peace.” Their letter was published in both The Nation and The Guardian.
Punk artist Ted Leo will be headlining a DC area concert in support of Bradley Manning on Saturday, November 24. Other performers on the bill entitled Ted Leo: A Benefit For Bradley Manning include Laughing Man, Southern Problems and Jail Solidarity. According to a listing for the benefit tickets are $10 for the all-ages show. Read more and watch a video of Ted Leo perform.
